Typically, the second stage of a Falcon 9 rocket is designed to re-enter Earth's atmosphere and incinerate upon friction or plunge into the deep ocean. However, the specific trajectory and high thrust required to propel a payload toward the Moon meant that this particular stage remained in space. Once its fuel was exhausted, the stage became a derelict object, drifting without propulsion or steering.
